Students engage in five types of activities everyday to promote their literacy development: read to self, read to others, listen to reading, work on writing, and work with words. During Readers' and Writers' Workshops, students have fun learning about different genres, applying reading strategies, and producing their own stories and poems. The Wilson Fundations Program supports their reading and writing skills by deepening their understanding of spelling patterns and letter sounds.
Students in Room 7 become mathematicians! The ThinkMath! Program helps students strengthen their computational and problem solving skills. They explore many important topics including addition and subtraction within 20, place value with tens and ones, linear measurement, geometry, and much more! Students especially love practicing and applying concepts they learn by playing math games with friends and working on creative math projects.
Science in first grade encourages students to wonder, explore, create, and analyze. The science themes for first grade include life cycles, air, and observing weather and seasons.
In social studies, students learn about community helpers and how to be a good citizen. They study major U.S. historical events, figures, symbols, and national holidays and learn why they are important to Americans.
